For October, our "page-to-screen" book club, I Read That Movie @ the Library, is getting into the Halloween spirit with the classic sci-fi horror novel The Invisible Man, by the great H.G. Wells. Published in 1897, it tells the story of a scientist known as Griffin, whose research into optics has led to his discovery of a method for making himself invisible. After performing the procedure on himself, he is unable to reverse the process, after he which he embarks on a violent and terrifying crime spree before meeting his end.
Thanks to a generous grant from the Memphis Library Foundation, we have a limited number of copies to give to participants, so please come to the Humanities Desk on the 2nd Floor of the Central Library to claim your copy of The Invisible Man while supplies last. We will also gather as many circulating library copies of the book as possible for readers to borrow after the other copies are given away.
Participants are invited to read the the book during October, then come for a screening of the classic 1933 horror film adaptation, directed by James Whale (who also directed the original Frankenstein adaptation) and starring Claude Rains and Gloria Stuart (who gained renewed fame later in life by playing the older version of Rose in the epic 1997 film Titanic).
The screening (including popcorn, drinks, and Halloween treats!) will take place on Halloween evening, October 31, at 6:30 p.m. in the Children's Courtyard area, weather permitting, followed by a conversation about the movie and book. If the weather doesn't cooperate, we will have the screening inside in Meeting Room A.
Everyone is encouraged to get into the Halloween spirit and come in costume!
And as always, even if you don't have the opportunity to read the book, you are welcome to join us to watch the movie and participate in the conversation!
