Program Description

Event Details

For June (and July), our "page-to-screen" book club, I Read That Movie @ the Library, will feature a 2-month selection for the first time. We will be reading the epic 1965 sci-fi novel Dune by Frank Herbert, which itself was initially published as two separate serials before its publication as a single novel. The story is set in a distant interstellar future in which noble houses control planetary fiefdoms, including the planet Arrakis, the universe's only source for the coveted drug 'spice' which is required for extended space travel. House Atreides is given control of the inhospitable planet, forcing its young future leader Paul to confront the real possibility that he is the prophesized savior of the Fremen, the aboriginal inhabitants of Arrakis.

Copies of the book will be made available at the Humanities Desk on the 2nd Floor of the Central Library, as well as other locations in the MPL system. Participants are invited to read the first half of the book during June, then come for a screening of the 2021 film adaptation Dune (Part 1) directed by Denis Villeneuve and starring Timothee Chalamet as as Paul Atreides, which was nominated for ten Academy Awards (including Best Picture) and won six.

The screening (including popcorn, drinks, and other snacks!) will take place on June 29 at 2:00 p.m. in Room L-56 at the Central Library, followed by a discussion about the book and the movie.

(We will be reading the second half of the book in July, after which we will screen the 2024 film Dune (Part 2) on July 27. You can find that calendar event by clicking https://memphis.librarycalendar.com/event/i-read-movie-library-dune-part-2-9573.)

Even if you don't have the opportunity to read the book, you are welcome to join us to watch the movie and participate in the conversation!
