Living Poets Society
April 25-May 30
Thursdays 6-8pm
With due respect to Mr. Keating from the film Dead Poets Society, too many of us associate the traditional study of poetry with dead writers and school assignments. We may love their work, but knowing only these poets makes poetry seem like a relic of the past and not something relevant to our lives.
Join the Living Poets Society! In this 6-week class we will meet contemporary poets who are helping us understand what it means to be alive at this moment. We’ll learn about their backgrounds, read major works, and view short interviews and readings to consider the themes and concerns in their writing. (Also, expect to meet women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ poets who might not have made it into Mr. Keating’s lectures).
Reading the diverse voices of poets today can connect us to our contemporaries and understand their fears, joys, and contradictions. Featured poets include Ada Limón, Tracy K. Smith, Terrance Hayes and others.
