Program Description

Event Details

For September, our "page-to-screen" book club, I Read That Movie @ the Library, is reading the 1996 crime fiction novel Out of Sight, written by Elmore Leonard, many of whose popular novels and stories have been adapted for film and television.

As this story begins, "gentleman thief" Jack Foley is busting out of a Florida prison, only to have his scheme nearly thwarted by shotgun-toting federal agent Karen Sisco. After the two hit it off while unexpectedly sharing a cramped car trunk, Foley sets his sights on a major heist in Detroit, but Sisco has other plans for their next encounter.

Participants are invited to read the book, then come for a screening of the 1998 film adaptation directed by Steven Soderbergh, starring Jennifer Lopez as Agent Sisco and George Clooney as Foley, along with a slew of prominent actors in supporting roles and cameos.

Copies of the book will be available at the Reference Desk in the Humanities Department on the 2nd floor of the Central Library. Thanks to a generous grant from the Memphis Library Foundation, a limited number of new copies of the book will be given away to participants, and any additional Library copies will be available to borrow.

The screening (including popcorn, drinks, and other snacks!) will take place on Saturday, September 27 at 2:00 p.m. in Room L-56, followed by a discussion about the book and the film. Even if you haven't read the book, you are welcome to join us to watch the movie and participate in the conversation!
