For December, our "page-to-screen" book club, I Read That Movie @ the Library, enters the fray of the age-old debate: is Die Hard a Christmas movie??
This month's book selection is the 1979 thriller Nothing Lasts Forever by Roderick Thorp, a sequel to his 1966 book The Detective, which was adapted into a hit movie starring Frank Sinatra. In the book, retired NYPD detective Joe Leland is visiting his daughter's workplace in a Los Angeles skyscraper on Christmas Eve when the building is taken over by a group of terrorists. A barefoot Leland is forced into action in order to save the day.
Participants are invited to read the book, then come for a screening of the hit 1988 movie adaptation directed by John McTiernan, starring Bruce Willis as the hero and the amazing Alan Rickman as the terrorist leader.
Copies of the book are available at the Humanities Reference Desk on the 2nd floor of the Central Library. Thanks to a generous grant from the Memphis Library Foundation, a limited number of new copies will be given away to participants, and additional copies are available to borrow.
The screening (including popcorn, drinks, and other snacks!) will take place on Saturday, December 20 at 2:00 p.m. in Room L-56, followed by a discussion about the book and the film. Even if you haven't read the book, you are welcome to join us to watch the movie and participate in the conversation!
