For January, our "page-to-screen" book club, I Read That Movie @ the Library, is reading the 1990 science fiction bestseller Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton. The novel describes the heretofore secret creation of a technologically advanced zoological park on a private island off the coast of Costa Rica owned by eccentric billionaire John Hammond, where genetically regenerated dinosaurs have been grown and will be on display for visitors. While on a tour of the park to assure investors of its safety and financial viability, security measures are compromised by an employee involved in corporate espionage, resulting in the escape of dinosaurs from their enclosures. Chaos ensues.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Memphis Library Foundation, we have a limited number of copies of each month's reading selection to give to participants, so please come to the Humanities Desk on the 2nd Floor of the Central Library to claim your copy of Jurassic Park while supplies last. We will also gather as many circulating library copies of the play as possible for readers to borrow after the other copies are given away.

Participants are invited to read the the book, then come for a screening of the blockbuster 1993 film adaptation directed by Steven Spielberg, which holds the distinction of being the oldest film to have grossed over $1 billion at the box office. Considered one of the greatest action thrillers of all time, it won 3 Oscars and in 2018 it was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.

The screening (including popcorn, drinks, and other snacks!) will take place on January 25 at 2:00 p.m. in Room L-56 at the Central Library, followed by a discussion about the book and the movie.

Even if you don't have the opportunity to read the book, you are welcome to join us to watch the movie and participate in the conversation!
