Event Details
In March, our popular "page-to-screen" book club, I Read That Movie @ the Library, will read Judy Blume's Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret, the classic 1970 coming-of-age novel that was adapted into a popular and critically acclaimed 2023 movie.
The book was immensely popular among readers at the time of its publication (and since), while also earning accolades such as its selection as The New York Times Book of the Year in 1970 and its inclusion in Time magazine's 2010 list of the 100 best English-language novels published since 1923. Readers connected with the young title character grappling with frankly-described challenges of moving to a new town, anxiety about sex and menstruation, and questions about religion. Those same factors have made the book a consistent target of parties trying to ban the book from libraries to prevent young people from having access to it.
Copies of the book will be available at the Humanities Desk on the 2nd Floor of the Central Library, as well as other locations in the MPL system. Participants are invited to read the book, then come for a screening of the 2023 film, featuring performances by Rachel McAdams and Kathy Bates.
The screening will take place on March 30 at 2:00 p.m. in Room L-56 at the Central Library, followed by a discussion about the book and the movie.
Even if you don't have the opportunity to read the book, you are welcome to join us to watch the movie and participate in the conversation!
