(PLEASE NOTE: THIS EVENT WAS RESCHEDULED FROM ITS ORIGINAL DATE OF SATURDAY, AUGUST 31.)

For August, our "page-to-screen" book club, I Read That Movie @ the Library, is reading the classic 1935 adventure novel The African Queen by C.S. Forester, an epic tale of opposites attract set during World War I in colonial Africa. The fast-moving story throws together an unreliable Cockney riverboat captain and the sister of a Methodist missionary in an against-all-odds battle for survival against the river, the heat, the insects, and the German army, with heroism and romance ultimately taking the day.

Look for a copy of the book at the Humanities Desk on the 2nd Floor of the Central Library, as well as other locations in the MPL system. Participants are invited to read the the book during August, then come for a screening of the beloved 1951 film adaptation directed by John Huston and starring Katharine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart (the character became Canadian to explain Bogart's lack of a British accent), a performance for which Bogart won his only Oscar. The movie was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry in 1994.

The screening (including popcorn, drinks, and other snacks!) will take place on August 31 at 2:00 p.m. in Room L-56 at the Central Library, followed by a discussion about the book and the movie.

Even if you don't have the opportunity to read the book, you are welcome to join us to watch the movie and participate in the conversation!
