Event Details

For May, A Wider Angle, our monthly film series highlighting independent global cinema, will screen the 2020 film True Mothers, written and directed by Naomi Kawase. Based on the 2015 novel Asa ga Kuru (Morning Comes) by Mizuki Trujimura, the film was Japan's official entry for Best International Feature Film for the 93rd Academy Awards (2021).

After a long and unsuccessful struggle to conceive, a couple decide to adopt. Six years later, a young woman claiming to be the child's biological mother contacts the family and demands the return of her son, forcing the family to consider taking drastic measures to stay together.

In Japanese with English subtitles. (Running time 140 minutes - due to the film's length, the screening will begin promptly at 6:00 p.m.)
