Event Details
For February, A Wider Angle, our monthly film series highlighting independent global cinema, will screen the 2022 coming-of-age film The Sales Girl, directed by acclaimed Mongolian director Sengedorj Janchivdorj. The movie, noted for a thumping soundtrack and quirky filmmaking, premiered in North America at the New York Asian Film Festival, where it took home the Uncaged Award for Best Feature Film.
Saruul is an innocent young college student studying engineering who spends much of her lab time drawing and sketching. As a favor for an injured friend, she takes a temporary job at an adult store owned by Katya, an outlandish and eccentric ex-ballerina. At first, Saruul's poker-faced indifference makes her the perfect foil for the sex shop's clientele, who run the gamut from nervously secretive neophytes to brazenly open experts. As Katya and Saruul's relationship deepens, both women push each other to explore new horizons: Katya comes to realize that she must stop living in the past, while Saruul grows in confidence to pursue her own educational and personal interests rather than have them dictated to her by others.
In Mongolian with English subtitles. (Running time 123 minutes)
