Event Details
For October, A Wider Angle, our monthly film series highlighting independent global cinema, will screen the 2022 drama Before, Now & Then, written and directed by Indonesian filmmaker Kamia Andini, which she adapted from the novel My Name is Jais Darga (Jais Darga Namaku) by Ahda Imran, who also co-wrote the screenplay. The film premiered at the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale), where one member of the cast won the award for Best Supporting Performance.
In the politically tumultuous and violent Indonesia of the 1960s, Nana, married to an older, wealthy landowner, oversees the family's farming interests while inwardly longing for her first husband who was abducted and presumably killed a decade earlier during the country's fight for independence. Faced with her husband's infidelity, Nana forms a unique bond with his young mistress, Ina. The two women are mutually strengthened by their unity and shared secrets, and Nana will call on that strength when someone from her past shows up, forcing her to choose the future life she wants to live.
In Indonesian with English subtitles. (Running time 103 minutes)
