Event Details
For September, A Wider Angle, our monthly film series highlighting independent global cinema, will screen the 2020 German coming-of-age film Cocoon, directed by Leonie Krippendorff. The film debuted at the prestigious Berlin Film Festival, and received praise at numerous other film festivals where it has been screened.
As the film's name implies, its main character, Nora (played by Lena Urzendowsky who won Best Young Actress at the Bavarian Film Awards for her performance), a quiet childlike girl, undergoes a metamorphosis during a hot summer in Berlin, just like the caterpillars she nurtures in a jar in her bedroom. After getting her first period during a gym class, cool girl Romy comes to her rescue, sparking an unexpected relationship that Nora begins to realize she wants to be more than mere friendship. Initially shy, Nora learns that to open herself up to the possibility of love might also end in heartbreak.
In German with English subtitles. (Running time 95 minutes)
