Event Details

For April, A Wider Angle, our monthly foreign and independent film series, will screen the 2019 Guatemalan film Temblores (Tremors), directed by Jayro Bustamante, whose previous film, Ixcanul (Volcano), was selected as the Guatemalan entry for Best Foreign Language Film in 2015. This film premiered in the Panorama section of the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival (the Berlinale) where it was nominated for the Teddy Award for Best LGBTQ-themed feature film. It later won the Sebastiane Latino Award for best Latin American LGBTQ-themed film at the 2019 San Sebastian International Film Festival in Spain.

The film's main character, Pablo, a devoted husband, son, father, and respected member of the Guatemala City Evangelical Christian community, is confronted by his family, who has learned of his romantic relationship with another man. Shocked by Pablo's decision to live his life honestly, his family denies him access to his two young children despite the efforts of a loyal household employee to allow Pablo to see them. Fired by the consulting firm for whom he has done exemplary work, the seemingly hopeless Pablo agrees to undergo "conversion" therapy in order to save his connection with his children.

In Spanish with English subtitles. (Running time 107 minutes)

A Wider Angle film series is made possible through funding provided by the Friends of the Library.
