Event Details

For March, A Wider Angle, our monthly foreign and independent film series, will screen the 2021 Korean film ALONERS, directed by first-time director Hong Sung-Eun, and featuring stand-out acting performances by its cast, particularly Gong Seung-yeon in the lead role, a performance for which she won the Best New Actress award at Korea's Blue Dragon Film Awards and Best Actress at the Torino Film Festival in Italy.

The introspective movie explores the disconnection of modern-day life brought about by technology and smart devices. Jina is a top performer at a credit card company call center, but lives her life in near complete solitude, eating by herself, living alone, and almost always watching videos on her phone. She's dealing with the recent death of her mother, a nagging father from whom she's mostly estranged, and an unwanted assignment training a new employee at work. The mysterious death of a neighbor forces her to confront her own isolation and examine why she has walled herself off from the world for so long.

In Korean with English subtitles. (Running time 91 minutes)

A Wider Angle film series is made possible through funding provided by the Friends of the Library.
