Event Details

For January, A Wider Angle, our monthly film series highlighting independent global cinema, will screen the 2020 drama 200 Meters, written and directed by Palestinian filmmaker Ameen Nayfeh. The film premiered at the prestigious Venice International Film Festival, and it was chosen as the country of Jordan's entry for Best International Feature Film for the the 93rd Academy Awards.

The film's title references the short distance that Mustafa, a Palestinian construction worker, lives in the West Bank town of Tulkarm apart from his wife and children, who are on the other side of the Israeli border wall. Mustafa visits them daily using his work permit, but when he receives word that his son has been injured and is receiving treatment in an Israeli hospital, a technicality prevents Mustafa from crossing the checkpoint to go see him. Suddenly, the seemingly short distance that separates Mustafa from his family seems like a never-ending chasm as he is forced to take increasingly desperate measures in his efforts to do what he must as a father.

In Arabic, Hebrew, and English with English subtitles. (Running time 96 minutes)
